How to Calibrate pH and EC on the Hanna HI98129 pH, Conductivity, and TDS Waterproof Tester

Figure 1 Watch an Instrument Choice scientist calibrate pH and EC on the Hanna HI98129 pH, Conductivity and TDS Waterproof Tester here.

Materials

You will need;

  1. The Hanna HI98129 pH, Conductivity, and TDS Waterproof Tester.
  2. pH buffer solutions. For this example, we perform a two-point calibration to pH 4 and pH 7.
  3. Conductivity calibration solution. In this example, we use 1413us/cm.
  4. Three clean containers for the individual pH and EC calibration solutions; and
  5. Water for rinsing between solutions.

pH Calibration Steps

  1. Ensure the meter is in pH measurement mode. If not, put the device into pH measurement mode by pressing ‘SET/HOLD.’
  2. In pH measurement mode, press and hold ‘ON/MODE’ until 'CAL' appears on the LCD screen's second line.
  3. The first requested buffer ‘pH7.01’ will appear on the screen. Immerse the electrode in pH 7.
  4. The device will then recognise the buffer and display 'REC.' Keep immersed in the solution.
  5. After a while, the meter will change the display on the top line of the LCD to ‘pH4.01’, and 'USE' on the second line. When this occurs, the meter is calibrated to pH 7 and is now requesting the next buffer.
  6. Give the electrode a quick rinse, then immerse it in the requested 4.01 buffer.
  7. When the second buffer is recognised and accepted, the LCD will display 'OK' for 1 second, and then the meter will return to the normal measuring mode.
  8. The pH calibration is complete.

    Conductivity Calibration Steps

  9. Change the meter to conductivity measurement mode by pressing ‘SET/HOLD.’
  10. In conductivity measurement mode, press and hold the ‘ON/MODE’ button until 'CAL' appears on the second LCD row.
  11. When the device displays '1413', place the electrode into the requested solution.
  12. REC’ is displayed while the device is calibrating.
  13. Once the calibration is accepted, the LCD will display 'OK' for 1 second, and the meter will return to measurement mode.
  14. Conductivity calibration is now complete.

TDS Calibration Steps

Since there is a known relationship between EC and TDS readings, it is unnecessary to calibrate the TDS function for this meter.

Conclusion

With regular calibration of pH and conductivity, you ensure that your Hanna waterproof tester displays results to the highest degree of accuracy.
