How to Change the Impeller on Kestrel Wind Meters

How to Change the Impeller on Kestrel Wind Meters

Sturdy, able to float on water and built to last, Kestrel produces handheld wind meters that are perfect for home, hobby and professional use. As with most scientific equipment, some parts are prone to wear and tear. To ensure reliable results, the impeller on Kestrel meters will need periodic replacement. Impeller replacement every 2-3 years is recommended, and the changeover process is by no means an arduous task. The impeller for all Kestrel meters is identical, affordable (much cheaper than a new device!) and, user-replaceable.

Figure 1 Watch the Instrument Choice Scientists demonstrate how to change an impeller on a Kestrel meter here.

How to change the impeller on Kestrel Meters

  1. Start by removing the old impeller. Do this by pressing the old impeller firmly with your thumbs to remove the entire unit.
  2. Before installing the replacement, consider the position of the new impeller. Have the flat side with the small arrow facing the LCD on the front of the device and orient one arm of the new impeller straight up. (The impeller should look like a peace symbol or an upside-down Y).
  3. Press into place. Ensure you are only pressing the sides of the new impeller, avoid applying pressure to the centre as this may damage the precision hub bearing.
  4. Once the new impeller is in place and sitting flush, turn on the device and blow some air through the new impeller to test. If the new part moves freely and the device starts generating data, your replacement is complete.

Conclusion

The impeller on the Kestrel wind meters will need to be changed every 2-3 years to ensure you are reliably collecting accurate data.

Wind meter models with fixed impellers may require you to replace the entire device if the impeller fails. In contrast, Kestrel’s impeller replacement system will allow you to keep the same device running for years. Such an elegant design is a testament to the excellent quality and engineering standards you can expect from Kestrel meters.
