The Problem: | |
You work in a restaurant or a hospital and you need to ensure that your dishwasher is getting to a high enough temperature for effective disinfection to take place. You also need to get evidence to give to an auditor or supervisor that the temperature is getting high enough to meet the requirements. You have tried using a standard thermometer but you are finding it too difficult. So what is the best way of monitoring dishwasher temperatures? | |
The Solution: | |
A high temperature waterproof data logger would be the best option. Temperature loggers can be set up on your computer to log at a predetermined rate (every 15-30 seconds would be a good choice). They can then be put into the dishwasher, a complete cycle can be run, and the temperature information can be downloaded to a computer. The software will then create a graph and a table of the results which will let you see if the dishwasher has reached the required temperature. If it hasn’t reached a high enough temperature, the dishwasher temperature or run time can be adjusted, and the logger can be set again until the correct temperatures are being reached. One model which would be suitable is the Extreme Thermocron – TCX. This unit can withstand up to 125o C, has +/-0.5o C accuracy and can store up to 8000 samples at a time. It is a cost effective unit and about the size of 2 x $2 coins so it is easy to place in the dishwasher. Setup and download is performed through easy to use software with a USB interface. Another option that would be suitable is the HiTemp140 temperature logger. This unit can withstand up to 140o C with up to +/-0.1o C accuracy. It is fully waterproof (IP68) and can store up to 32,700 readings at a time. Both of the above options will allow you to export the data to Excel so that your data can be passed on to the relevant people.
