How to Measure Meat pH Using the IC-HI981036 pH Meat pH Tester

Harmful bacteria thrive in environments where pH is close to neutral or 7. It’s most practical, economical and legal to keep the pH of meat should low during the entire production process. You will prevent spoilage, maintain quality and comply with food safety regulations.

The IC-HI981036 meat pH meter by Hanna Instruments is designed especially for meat processing. Instrument Choice is impressed with the device’s practical design. For example, the meter features a conical tip that aids in penetrating meat when you are taking measurements. We also like the removable electrode sleeve that prevents blockages in the sensor mechanism and assists thoroughly clean the instrument.

How to Measure Meat pH Using the IC-HI981036 pH Meat pH Tester

  1. Before use or at least once per week, you must calibrate your pH meter to ensure accurate results. For best results, Instrument Choice recommends performing a minimum of a two-point calibration. If you are unsure how to calibrate this meter, watch the video ‘How to Calibrate the IC-HI981036 Meat pH Tester’.
  2. Press the button to turn the device on and remove the electrode storage cap.
  3. Gently insert the electrode into the meat sample you wish to measure. The recommended immersion level is where the removable electrode sleeve meets the electrode body.
  4. The hourglass on the LCD screen is the stabilisation indicator. Wait for the hourglass to disappear from the screen then, record your meat pH reading.
  5. Between samples, rinse the electrode in water to remove any residue. When you have finished with the device, wash the electrode in warm water with a mild soap, or use the Hanna Instruments cleaning solution for meat, grease, and fats.
  6. When the electrode is clean, add a few drops of storage solution into the electrode cap and replace. Store the IC-HI981036 away somewhere safe for your next meat pH measurement.

Conclusion

Hanna Instruments create a specialised range of pH meters designed to make measuring the pH of various food items straightforward and effortless. Measuring the pH of meat using the IC-HI981036 throughout the production process ensures consistent and safe end product, while the construction of the device means it is easy to clean and ideal to use in a food processing environment.
