What Instrument Measures Sound?
The measurement of sound levels is critical for many industries. Occupational, environmental and community noise strongly affects enjoyment and safety in these environments.
So, what instrument measures sound?
Q: What Instrument Measures Sound?
A: Sound Level Meters
The most popular instrument for measuring sound is called a sound level meter.
What are They?
Sound level meters are generally small, handheld instruments that feature microphones (for picking-up sounds), internal processors, and an LCD screen.
How Do They Work?
Generated soundwaves produce air pressure deviations, which in turn, cause the movement of a microphone's diaphragm. The sound level meter uses internal signal processing circuitry to convert this movement into an electrical signal. This electrical signal is then processed, read, and the resulting sound pressure level reported expressed in decibels on an LCD.
Definition: Decibel
A decibel is a relative unit of measurement for measuring the intensity of sound - equal to one-tenth of a 'bel.' The decibel scale (dB) is logarithmic, meaning that for every 10 dB increase, the increase in sound intensity is 10-times. For example, a 30 dB sound is ten times more intense than a 20 dB sound. The decibel scale begins at 0 dB, which is the quietest audible sound. The loudest possible sound for the human ear is about 194 dB.
Uses for Sound Level Meters
Sound level meters are devices used for acoustic measurements of music, noise, or other sounds. Major applications requiring sound level devices include:
- Construction sites
- Work & Occupational Safety
- Environmental monitoring
- The measurement of community noise (E.g. airports, busy roads etc.); and
- Motor vehicle engine noise.
Examples of Sound Level Meters
The following selection of sound meters, along with their specifications, key features, and examples of recommended use, provides insights into the types of devices available - which may help you determine the best instrument for your sound measurement needs.
Handheld Digital Sound Level Meter
Product Code: C-DSM1
The C-DSM1 is a low-cost, compact digital sound level meter that takes measurements with ease. Monitors sound from 30 to 130dB. Offers fast or slow measurement cycles and utilises both A weightings (i.e., effectively cuts off the lower and higher frequencies beyond the average person's hearing range) and C weightings (i.e., usually used for peak sound level, and some entertainment noise measurements).
C-DSM-1 Specifications
- Class: Type 2
- Range(s): Selectable 30-100 or 60-130dB
- Time Weightings: Fast (125ms) and Slow (1 second)
- Frequency Weighings: A and C
- Data Logging Capability: No
Instrument Choice Recommendation: The C-DSM1 will excel when used for basic investigations such as workplace OH&S, noise levels in clubs, the sound emitted from PA systems, and to protect car audio installers.
Casella 246 Digital Integrating Sound Level Meter
Product Code: CEL-246
The CEL-246 is a simple integrating sound level meter (i.e. measures sound over time). The CEL-246 offers excellent repeatability, together with the highest accuracy and performance, all housed in a rugged, compact design. The CEL-246 series' high-resolution display reports the time history of noise levels.
CEL-246 Specifications
- Class: Class 2
- Range(s): Selectable 30-100 or 60-130dB
- Time Weightings: Fast, Slow and Impulse
- Frequency Weighings: A and C
- Data Logging Capability: Yes up to 419,000 data points
Instrument Choice Recommendation: The CEL-246 is suitable for monitoring occupational, equipment, and fire alarm noises. Also, suggested for noise surveys.
Precision Integrating Digital Sound Level Meter (Class 1)
Product Code: CEL-620A1
Instruments in the CEL-62x Series of Integrating Digital Sound Level Meters meet the demands of global industrial health and safety professionals, and general noise measurement applications.
Functionality ranges from basic sound level measuring to integrated, real-time octave band analysis. Sound meters in the series comply with Australian workplace noise legislation.
CEL-620A1 Specifications
- Class: Class 1
- Range(s): 20 to 140dB RMS (single range), 143.0 dB Peak
- Time Weightings: Simultaneous Slow, Fast & Impulse
- Frequency Weighings: Simultaneous A, C and Linear (Z)
- Data Logging Capability: Up to 100 measurements
Instrument Choice Recommendation: Typical uses for the Class 1 CEL-620A1 sound level meter include occupational noise assessments, machinery noise tests, and to assist with the selection of hearing protection.
Conclusion
Sound level meters are the most common instrument used by professionals to monitor sound levels and noise. They come in all shapes and sizes - from entry-level meters suitable for basic sound investigations - to sophisticated models for assessing machinery, occupational work assessments, and more.
